sohrab-nasiri

Name: Sohrab

Grade: 4

School: Garfield Elementary

What languages do you speak?

Dari and English

How long have you been an ELL Student?

I started with two weeks left in school last year. (This is Sohrab’s first full year in the U.S.)

What are your language goals?

I want to be a doctor or engineer or something. You just try to make English. If you don’t know, you write, ask somebody. Just try. I just try. If somebody’s talking, I just listen. If somebody’s talking, I just see.

How do you use your first language?

I use Dari at home because my parents don’t speak English. I speak Dari, sometimes (with my) brother going to (the) park. I speak Dari with my family.

How is it helpful to speak multiple languages?

If you know two languages, it’s good. Here, you can’t talk with Afghan people. At school, you can speak English. I try to make a Spanish too. I make friends. My classmates sometimes speak English. I say, “What’s this mean? What’s this mean? What’s ‘por qué’? Did you know ‘por qué’ means ‘why’?”

What makes you proud of your heritage and where you come from?

I’m coming from Afghanistan. In Afghanistan some people fighting. We can’t always be learning. But here, you can be learning always. We leave our country for learning. I like Oakland. Two (places I’ve lived) is good. In Afghanistan is river, mountain. I like that. My friends is over there. We speak Dari.
