Championing Health & Wellness in Oakland

Michelle Oppen Michelle Oppen, OUSD Wellness Coordinator, was recently selected by the Board of Directors of the California School Based Health Alliance as a recipient of the 2016 School Health Champion Award.

This award honors champions in the fields of health policy, school leadership, and school-based health care in California. Michelle was chosen for her outstanding service and dedication to healthy, successful students.

“I am fortunate that I get to work and partner with many schools, district departments, community organizations, large collaboratives and individuals on a daily basis," Michelle said. "Everyone brings something dynamic to the table which means I get to learn a lot every day.”

Her work with the Wellness Program at OUSD moves us closer to fulfilling our mission be a Full Service Community District, supporting not only the academic success of our students, but their health as well.

“We are shifting the culture and environment at school sites” says Michelle.  “Breaking down those barriers that tell students, staff and families that health issues are not school academic issues.  In reality, of course, they are connected and we are allowing recognition of that.”
