McClymonds High Football Team Notches Historic Win

The McClymonds Football Warriors celebrate following their Section Championship.

On Saturday, December 10, the McClymonds High School Football Warriors captured the CIF Northern California Division 5A Championship - making them the first team in the history of the Oakland Athletic League (OAL) with such an accomplishment. The Warriors beat the reigning California State Champions, the East Nicolaus High Spartans, from the town of Nicolaus, by a score of 45-26.

McClymonds was down 14-6 in the second quarter but led East Nicolaus 20-14 at the half. By the middle of the third quarter, the score was tied at 20. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that McClymonds took control of the game, sealing the victory in the final minutes. Junior Quarterback Emoreea Fountain said, “we just had to stay together and keep moving forward.”

McClymonds had been to this Northern California title game on three prior occasions and lost all three times. In fact, no OAL team has ever gotten this far in football. “It’s huge for McClymonds and the whole Mack family,” Head Coach Michael Peters said.

Now, it’s on to Southern California where McClymonds will face the La Jolla Country Day Torreys from San Diego County. The Torreys are a formidable opponent, led by standout quarterback Braxton Burmeister, who is already committed to playing college football at the University of Arizona. On Saturday in the Southern California Division 5A Championship Game against Arroyo High School, Burmeister threw for 432 yards and seven touchdowns. “We have to study the film, make some defensive adjustments and keep the offense rolling,” said Fountain.

As for the honor of heading to the California State Division 5A Football Championship, senior running back Devin White said, “ we have to play together as a team and win this game!”

The game is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at La Jolla Country Day School at 9490 Genesee Avenue in La Jolla.
