Principal's Message 4/1/2020
Good Evening Warrior Eagle Families,
This is your Principal, Ms. Taylor, with a COVID-19 update for April 1, 2020. I know that these last few weeks have been trying for all of us. My hope is that you are all taking the necessary precautions to keep you and your family safe and healthy. As many of you may have heard the announcement today by our State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond and our Governor Gavin Newsom, California Schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year due to the coronavirus pandemic. This means that our scholars will not return to the Westlake Campus this school year. However, this does not mean that learning and instruction will stop. Our continuity of education plan will continue through the end of the year. Westlake will be working closely with the district office to create the best plan possible for our scholars as we move towards the end of the school year such as exploring alternative plans for 8th Grade Promotion this year.
We want to ensure that our scholars are well prepared for this transition to distance learning. Many of you received a phone call prior to Spring Break from a Westlake Staff Member to check in with you and your scholar regarding being able to access the assignments on our website or through Google Classroom as well as to assess your scholar’s technology and wellness needs. Those calls will continue after Spring Break as we develop a plan for ensuring all scholars have what they need to continue with learning and instruction through the end of the school year. I will have updated information next week once we are all back at work (virtually) from Spring Break.
OUSD will continue distributing meals to families on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. The Alameda County Food Bank is also giving families a bag of groceries at the distribution sites. You can find a list of the sites on the Westlake Middle School website.
I would like to end by reiterating what I stated in my last update. Westlake is a family and community that has always supported and cared for one another and will continue to do so even in these difficult times. Our leadership and staff are here for you. Please reach out to any of us for assistance. If you have specific questions feel free to reach out to me via email at email@example.com. Stay safe and healthy and please remember to take care of yourself, take care of one another and take care of Westlake.
Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell is announcing that all Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) schools will remain closed for the remainder of this school year for in-person instruction. This is in alignment with the statement from Alameda County Superintendent of Schools, L. Karen Monroe that all K-12 schools in Alameda County remain closed for in-person instruction for the rest of the 2019-20 school year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Our students and staff will continue our continuity of education plans for the remainder of the school year. We will continue to improve how we serve our students during this time.
We are working to determine the full impact of this decision, including exploring alternative plans for celebrating our 2020 graduates, promotions of all other grades, whether summer school may be offered, and the loss of instructional learning. In the meantime, we continue to finalize plans to deliver technology to our students and families to help enhance the learning students can do at home.
As soon as possible, the District will send further communications on what this means for OUSD.
Thank you for your patience as we work together to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
COVID-19 EXTENDED SCHOOL CLOSURE NOTICE
OUSD SCHOOLS CLOSED THROUGH MAY 1, 2020
Principal's Message 3/25/2020
Good Afternoon Warrior Eagle Families,
This is your Principal, Ms. Taylor, with a COVID-19 update. I want to start by saying I hope you and your family are staying healthy during this time. We know that the past week and a half has not been the easiest for everyone but my hope is that you are finding comfort and peace in being with family and loved ones. As many of you may have heard, today it was announced by our Superintendent that the COVID-19 School Closure will be extended until May 1. This means that scholars will not return to school after Spring Break on April 6. This extended closure is happening to prevent the spread of corona virus. Public health experts tell us that the most effective way of minimizing the spread of COVID-19 is by keeping us away from each other. The Center for Disease Control says that longer school closures seem to be effective at slowing the spread.
This extended closure is going to be a significant change for all in the Westlake Community. However, the Leadership and Staff will do all that we can to support you and your family during this time. Over the next few days Westlake Teachers will be reaching out to check in with scholars and families to assess both technology and wellness needs. Please answer their calls and spend a few minutes checking in with them. We will be working on plans for Distance Learning to take place during the month of April. For current assignments please log onto the Westlake website and click on the COVID-19 School Closure Plan link.
As next week, March 30-April 3 is Spring Break, I will share more updated information on Monday, April 6. In the meantime, please check the Westlake website for district food distribution site information. Meals will continue to be distributed during Spring Break on Monday and Thursday from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. If you have specific questions feel free to reach out to me via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Even though we find ourselves in uncertain times, one thing remains certain...Westlake is a family and community that has always supported and cared for one another and will continue to do so even in these difficult times. Our leadership and staff are here for you. Please reach out to any of us for assistance. Stay safe and healthy and please remember to take care of yourself, take care of one another and take care of Westlake.
Good Evening Westlake Warrior Eagle Families:
This is your Principal Ms. Taylor with the Weekly Update for Friday, March 13, 2020. As I am sure most of you have already heard, due to rising concerns about coronavirus schools will be closed beginning Monday, March 16 through the end of Spring Break, Sunday, April 5. The hope is to be able to resume regular school instruction on Monday, April 6. Although scholars will not be in the school building, their academic growth remains a priority for all staff members here at the site. For this reason, Westlake teachers met this afternoon to develop lessons, projects and assignments that your scholar can be working on while they are out of school for the next 2 weeks. The 3rd week out is Spring Break and I want you to enjoy this time in a safe and healthy way. Today I asked all scholars to please take all textbooks, workbooks and any other class materials home as they will be able to access their assignments through Google Classroom and online on the Westlake Middle School website. Westlake teachers will be able to provide virtual support to scholars during this time. You will find a schedule for teacher support on our website as well. If your scholar does not have access to technology, please click this link and fill out a questionnaire from the Tech Exchange Program to be able to receive a chromebook (Tech Exchange Chromebook Distribution). We will also have printed grade-level packets available for pickup at Westlake on Tuesday, March 17 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. All of the class assignment information will be available on the Westlake website beginning next Tuesday, March 17. Also while scholars are out our custodial team will be deep cleaning the entire campus to support in ensuring the health and safety of the community upon returning to school.
During the school closure there will be twelve sites across the city where scholars can go to pick up breakfast and lunch for the week. Those sites are listed below and organized by region in Oakland. Scholars will be able to pick up 3 breakfasts and 3 lunches on Mondays between 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches on Thursdays between 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. (See the chart below for more information). All scheduled extra-curricular school activities are also cancelled at this time. This includes the 7th Grade Camping Trip that was scheduled for next week, the Southern California Spring Break College Tour and all sports activities. The Afterschool Program will also be closed until after Spring Break.
Westlake Staff will be on campus during the closure if you have any questions or concerns. We understand that this time will be difficult for many families but my hope is that all of you remain healthy and safe. We are a resilient community that has gone through many tough times but we always persevere and come out on top just like the Warrior Eagles that we are. Please be sure that your scholar is completing their assignments over the next two weeks. I will keep you all informed of any new information that arises. That’s all for now please remember to take care of yourself, take care of one another and take care of Westlake.
