This is the Weekly Update for Friday, September 7, 2018.

    News on Campus:

    • Parents, please listen carefully as we need your assistance with this matter.  We are asking that scholars not ride motorized scooters on or near campus and in the surrounding neighborhood as it is extremely dangerous.  We have been making announcements daily to the scholars since the first week of school. We have had 3 scholars in the past 3 weeks to be injured as a result.  Cars do not always see them as they are riding the scooters. Please take time to discuss the severity of this with your scholar and we ask that you all support us in keeping them safe by not allowing them to ride motorized scooters.
    • LCFF Forms are being sent home to newly enrolled students in the District (as of November 2017). A portion of state funding Westlake receives will be determined based on the demographics of student population, with higher funding with large concentrations of low-income, English Language Learner and foster youth populations.   Therefore we are required to establish and confirm the number of students that represent these categories by having families complete the original LCFF form. The form was given to your scholar (if needed) so please be sure to complete the form as soon as possible.

In the meantime, our Math and ELA Coaches are supporting our 6th Grade and 7th Grade math classes in ensuring our scholars are developing the skills they need for math success.  I will keep you posted as to when our Math Teacher begins. In the meantime if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
    • We have placed the order for our PE uniforms and are anticipating their arrival soon.  We will let the scholars know when they have arrived through our daily announcements.
    • Reminder: Cars will not be allowed in the school bus loading zone before or after school.  Please make arrangements to pick up your scholar in a safe place around the school campus. We want everyone to arrive and leave campus safely so please be sure that you are adhering to the traffic rules of the road.  We ask that parents please not double park in the front of the school or make U-Turns across Harrison Street.
    • Beginning in September, the 4th Friday of each month, I will host “Sipping the Tea with Ms. T”.  This will take place from 9:00 AM - 9:45 AM in our Family Resource Room. This will be a time for parents/guardians to come in and speak with me about Westlake and provide feedback, suggestions and/or ideas for strengthening our community. All parents/guardians are welcome to attend.
    • September 4-14 is the window for all scholars to take their first assessment of the year, the SRI.  This is a reading assessment to assist us in better supporting your scholar in developing literacy and reading comprehension skills.  Please be sure that your scholar is well rested and ready for this assessment during this time.

Good Evening Westlake Warrior Eagle Families

This is your Principal Ms. Taylor with the your Weekly Update for Friday, August 17, 2018. Thank you Westlake Scholars, Staff and Parents for a great start to the 2018-19 school year.  Our scholars have quickly gotten back into the groove of school. Because of this great start, we are anticipating this being a wonderful year for our Westlake Community. The following  information will also be available on our website for your review.

    Some highlights from this week:

    • On Tuesday our OUSD Superintendent Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell and Deputy Superintendent Sondra Aguilera came by for a visit. They visited classrooms and spoke with scholars and staff members.  Shout out to 7th grade scholars, Hazina Bey and Makhiya Jones- Robinson for taking time to speak with the Superintendent during her visit.
    • On Wednesday we held our first grade-level family assemblies.  The Admin Team (myself, Mr. Ron Thompson, Assistant Principal, and Mr. Moses Omolade, Community Schools Manager) spent time with the scholars informing them of our expectations for the year.
    • Scholars are doing well with adhering to our cell phone policy.  We had very few issues this week. Thank you Warrior Eagle parents for helping us to enforce this policy and help keep our scholars focused on their academics during the school day.

    Greetings Westlake Warrior Eagle Families,

This is your Principal Maya Taylor with the first Weekly Update of the school year and important information for the First Day of School.  We are so excited and have been eagerly anticipating the start of the 2018-19 school year. Our faculty and staff have been working tirelessly over the past week to ensure that they are prepared to receive your scholars on this Monday, August 13.  Please listen carefully as this message will contain important information regarding the first day of school. This information will also be available on our website for your review.

Scholars can begin arriving at school at 8:00 AM to pick up their class schedules. Sixth graders will pick up their schedules in the Great Hall, seventh graders in the Library and eighth graders in the Gym. Scholars, upon your arrival to school, please report to your designated location to pick up your schedule.  On your schedule you will find your classes and your locker assignment. Remember, all scholars are responsible for bringing their own padlock to school for their locker.

Parents of scholars that were not able to attend registration during our registration days on August 2, 3 and 6, will need to accompany their scholar to school on the first day and complete the required paperwork prior to their scholar receiving their class schedule.  Seventh Grade Scholars and families, please be sure that you have turned in documentation of having taken your required Tdap vaccination.

Some important reminders for the school year:

    • School begins daily at 8:55 AM.  There will be a warning bell at 8:50 AM to alert scholars to transition to their 1st period class.  All scholars should be on time to first period daily. On time means lined up at the door greeting your teacher or in your seat in your classroom when the bell rings at 8:55 AM.
    • Scholars can begin arriving on campus at 8:00 AM daily.  However, the building will not be open until 8:30 AM. The blacktop area will be open for scholars that arrive before 8:30 AM.
    • Cars will not be allowed in the school bus loading zone before or after school.  Please make arrangements to pick up your scholar in a safe place around the school campus.
    • There is no Advisory period this year.  During 1st period scholars will receive breakfast in the classroom and hear the morning announcements.  Again, it is very important to be on time to not only 1st period but all classes throughout the day.
    • Cell phones are to be used before school and after school ONLY.  Cell phones are not to be visible and/or used during passing period and during class. Parents, if you need to speak with your scholar please call the main office at 510-879-2130.  We appreciate your partnership in expressing the importance of this policy with your scholar.
    • The cafeteria is open daily for lunch.  All Westlake scholars can partake in lunch daily.
    • School will dismiss at 3:15 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  We ask that all scholars are off campus by 3:30 PM unless they are participating in an after school activity (the EBAYC after school program, Scholar Study Center or practice for sports).  School will dismiss at 1:10 PM on Wednesday. Lunch will be served immediately following school from 1:10 PM -1:40 PM. If scholars are not having lunch then we ask that they are off campus by 1:25 PM.  If a scholar is having lunch we ask that they are off campus by 1:45 PM.

Those are the updates for the first week of school.  Stay fly and SOAR and please remember to take care of yourself, take care of one another and take care of Westlake.
