Hello Sankofa United Families:
This is your principal, Dennis Guikema. I hope this message finds you well.
Teachers returned to work yesterday. We have had a positive, full and engaging two days of professional development and preparation for distance learning. We are all sad we won’t be together on the campus, but we are certainly looking forward to seeing you all “virtually” on Monday, our first day of classes.
Your child’s teacher will email you tomorrow, Friday, with a welcome, schedule, and other resources. You can expect an all class daily morning meeting at the same time each day, as well as a schedule of learning activities that are specific to your child’s grade level. If you do not get an email by Saturday morning, please call our office and leave a message at 510-654-7787. Be sure to include your child’s name and grade level in your message, and please confirm your best contact information.
Monday, August 10, we will have technology distribution for families who need a Chromebook and/or hotspot. If you have a loaner Chromebook from last year or a personal device, such as a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop computer that includes a camera and microphone, you should be all set. However, if you need a Chromebook, please come to Sankofa United on Monday. Also, if you do not have wi-fi and need a hotspot, those will be available as well. Our distribution will be at specific times for specific grades. It will be at the drop-off circle. The entrance to this is on 61st in the middle of the block between Shattuck and Racine. You must wear a mask and observe 6 feet of social distancing. We encourage only one adult from each family to come, if that is possible. The times for pick up are as follows:
If you have more than one child at Sankofa United, you only need to come once to pick up multiple devices.
Meal distribution also resumes Monday and Thursday mornings at Sankofa United, at the corner of Shattuck and 61st.
Reminder: Registration now open. All families must register their child at the start of each school year. If you did not register online in June, we would appreciate it if you did this in the coming weeks. Here is a link to a slide deck with information about how to do this. Please feel free to reach out for help with this by emailing Sankofa’s Community School Manager, Erica Macklin at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling the Student Welcome Center at 510-879-4600.
Our teachers and support staff are excited to see our kiddos and families! See you soon!
