Overview

We are a community school in the Fairfax District of East Oakland. Horace Mann is a community centered on creating an anti-racist learning environment for students. We focus on literacy, math and the socioemotional well-being of all scholars. Our small intimate setting allows us to support your scholar in and out of the classroom.

Horace Mann serves scholars in grades K - 5 and uses the knowledge we gain as adults to help scholars become naturally curious about their world. We equip scholars with the skills they need to navigate through high school and college and eventually become caring, productive, contributing citizens in the world in which they live.

We offer many opportunities for your scholar to find, explore and cultivate their passion. Here are a few of the programs and services we provide:

  • Additional literacy instruction to all scholars
  • Monthly parent cafe with the Principal
  • Parent workshops to support your scholar’s learning at home
  • Garden club
  • Leadership development through:
    • Upward Roots
    • Young Heroes Program
    • Peer Restorative Justice Facilitator
    • Student Leadership Council
  • Dance class through Destiny Arts
  • After-school program focused on literacy and includes art, tennis, soccer, martial arts:
    • After-school partners:
