    April 9, 2020

    Dear Montera Students and Families,

We hope that this message finds you well during this difficult time.  We all find ourselves in unprecedented circumstances and must now find new ways of connection, communication, and continued learning for our students.  Over Spring Break, we learned that OUSD Schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. We miss our students and our vibrant campus, but we appreciate everyone for their patience and understanding as we move forward.

The Montera Administrative Team has been working to develop a clear and consistent Continuity of Education plan for our students and families.  Montera teachers and administration are working this week to get staff trained on new/existing platforms, communicating expectations for distance teaching and student progress feedback, reaching out to families, and distributing Chromebooks to students and families in need.

As we move forward, Schoology will be our primary method of communication and the hub for our distance learning.  Guardians, if you would like access to your student’s Schoology account, please e-mail Ms. Howard ( for the access code.  Below are a few updates that we have for you as of this week.  We will continue to update families and students as it becomes necessary throughout this process.

In accordance with State/District policy, students will not be penalized for any work assigned after Friday, March 13th, 2020 (the last day of school at Montera) up through this Friday, April 10th. Beginning Monday, April 13th, 2020, our more robust distance-learning plan officially begins (more details below).  During this time, we asked students to use/check the following page for Teacher Plans for School Closure (3/13/20 - 4/10/20) and follow teacher instructions.  Please note that while work assigned during this period (3/13-4/10)  did not count for a letter grade, it has been an important period for setting up routines and expectations for student learning.

Starting Monday, April 13th, 2020, students will be graded in each of their classes on a “Credit” or “No Credit” basis.  Students will earn credit by logging into Schoology, completing and turning in assignments, and communicating with their teachers.  Students will not be penalized for missing work if they are experiencing known hardship as a result of COVID-19, and every effort will be made to accommodate students and families during this difficult time. Please inform the administration about your challenges and we will do our best to support you within our capacity. Our teachers will be following the schedule outlined in the document Weekly Plans During School Closure to ensure access to all classes during the day.

    Important Additional Reminders:

    1. State testing cannot proceed under these circumstances, and as a result, SBAC/CAST/CAA/ELPAC have all been canceled for this school year.

    1. Montera teachers and staff will maintain connection and lines of communication with our students and families despite the closure of the school site.  Montera teachers and staff will be reaching out to students to take part in Distance Learning and Virtual Classes beginning the week of April 13, 2020.  See this document for more information: Weekly Plans During School Closure

    1. Student emails are now open for student use.  Students should sign in with the same username ( and password (00+six digit ID number) you use for a Chromebook.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

    1. We do not currently have any updates regarding Promotion, 8th Grade Activities or future planned Montera student activities.  Once we know details with more certainty, we will let families know.

We have never appreciated the strength of our school community more than we do now.  We are working together to make sure that our community remains safe and strong.  We are Montera, We are One.

    In Community,

    Mr.   Darren Avent
