School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

The School Health Advisory Council is an advisory board to Oakland Unified School District, Community Schools and Student Services, made up of OUSD teachers, staff, parents, and community partner organizations.

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) meets 3-4 times per school year and makes recommendations to the Community Schools and Student Services Department to follow best practices in health education while maintaining compliance with state laws and local community priorities.

The specific functions of the OUSD SHAC are to support the components of the Healthy Oakland Kids & Teens program:

  1. Health Education for K-12 grade students, including puberty and sexual health, grades 5-12;
  2. Improving access to Health Services including sexual health services;
  3. Creating Safe and Supportive Environments for LGBTQ students;
  4. Youth Risk Behavior Survey and Profiles survey;
  5. Policy review and implementation.

Applications for membership are accepted on a rolling basis.
