Most children in the state of California are eligible for medical coverage through a variety of public insurances and programs. Please visit the Covered California website to explore medical coverage options for children. Additionally, you can also visit the Alameda County Social Services Agency location near you to apply for medical coverage in-person. You can also complete applications by phone, mail, or online, and interpreter services are readily available to provide translation support. Please look at the Alameda County Social Services Agency website for more information and an office location near you.

If your child is already covered by either Medi-Cal or private insurance, you can usually find a provider directly online under your assigned managed care plan or request by phone. Please contact the customer service number on the back of your insurance card to get member assistance to identify a provider. If you recently obtained coverage for your child, it’s also possible you already have a provider assigned to you, and you can contact the member services number on the front or back of your insurance card. If you do not have an insurance card (or haven’t received it yet), please contact the agency you applied for coverage through, so they can direct you to the right information.

California has one of the most comprehensive Medicaid programs in the country, and deems several population groups eligible in the state (that may not be eligible in other states). If individuals are unable to obtain coverage by other means (i.e. through an employer) AND are over-income for Medi-Cal, Covered California is a hub that still offers several other options families can apply for (i.e. federal marketplace, etc.).

As mentioned above, applications can be done online, by phone, or in person. It’s usually easier to apply in person if translation/interpreter support is needed. Walk-ins are usually accepted, but if the office is busy that day an appointment may be best. Here is a list of SSA office locations for the County:
