Health Services
You can't educate a child who isn't healthy, and you can't keep a child healthy who isn't educated. - Joycelyn Elders, former US Surgeon General
About Health Services
Oakland’s youth suffer disproportionately from a number of chronic health conditions including asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, cystic fibrosis, etc. School Nurses collaborate with students’ primary health care provider to provide assessment, treatment, and case-management of students with chronic health conditions, so that students can remain in school ready to learn.
Health Services oversees the District’s credentialed School Nursing staff, and works to ensure that students have an optimal learning experience and that opportunities to learn are not mitigated by students’ medical and health conditions.
School nurses:
- Collaborate with the Alameda County Public Health Department to prevent and control communicable disease and comply with the California Department of Public Health regarding immunization requirements for school-age children.
- Coordinate and provide health education (i.e., nutrition, puberty education, hygiene, asthma management, etc.) to students in the classroom or small group settings.
- Provide daily diabetes management and other chronic disease care.
- Provide emergency care for illness or injury.
