District-Wide Projects

To maintain a healthy and joyful environment for students, OUSD is implementing a wide range of security efforts to ensure their safety. Upgrading and maintaining surveillance camera systems, developing and preparing evacuation maps, adding door entry systems that empower school sites to control who can access the premises using video intercoms, and other safety initiatives are a part of OUSD's comprehensive plan to keep students across the district safe. 

Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) acknowledges the urgent and lasting effects of the global climate crisis. As such, the District is prioritizing the pressing need for creating a socially equitable, economically stable, and climate-resilient school district. The OUSD Facilities Planning and Management Department Sustainability Team is committed to serving the District community through those principles and establishing and preserving an environmentally sustainable school system.

The Facilities Planning and Management Department has a multitude of major capital projects that are ongoing and completed. Major capital projects are defined as projects that exceed $5 million and are funded through bond measures or alternative funding sources. These projects involve a broad range of enhancements and renovations to various facilities, and other related items.

OUSD is assessing learning environment conditions, such as CO2 emission, humidity, temperature, and comfortability, to establish ways to improve overall student learning. In response to assessments, various projects, including adding cooling and air purification systems and updating building and classroom window systems, will be completed across OUSD. These improvements will enhance the overall classroom environment for students, teachers, and school staff. 

OUSD is redesigning and realizing next-generation schoolyards that provide dynamic, joyful play spaces for health, wellness, and academic success. Branded as “Living Schoolyards,” this initiative aims to transform the current paved-over schoolyards into places where nature is integrated into the everyday experience of our students and communities.

OUSD is committed to enhancing the technology infrastructure across the district to support next-generation student learning and teaching. This initiative includes but is not limited to, upgrading classroom and instructional technology, expanding network capabilities, and improving Wi-Fi access. These efforts ensure that students and teachers can access the tools and resources to foster innovative learning experiences.

Deferred Maintenance involves the major repair or replacement of existing school building components projected to be maintained on a district-wide basis over five years so that schools are safe for learning. This work can include roofing, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, updating electrical, wall systems, and floor systems, and other building components.

OUSD has partnered with Under Armour and Eat.Learn.Play. to renovate middle and high school gymnasiums around the District. The work includes refinishing floors, installing new wall pads, hoops, and backboards, replacing scoreboards, and painting facilities.
