Healthy School Environment
Overview
A healthy school environment is achieved by improving building infrastructure, creating green technology improvements, identifying pollutant concerns, and providing nature-based spaces. In a healthy school environment, students and staff are provided with proper resources for safe learning spaces and a sustainable building environment that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve learning conditions.
OUSD is ensuring healthy school environments through the development of the Sustainability Policy and Plan.
Sustainable Facilities
The term “sustainable facilities” refers to buildings and structures designed, constructed, and operated to minimize their environmental impact. These facilities focus on energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and the use of sustainable materials. They aim to provide healthy indoor environments while reducing the overall carbon footprint and promoting sustainability.
Investing in sustainable and well-designed school facilities can significantly boost student learning outcomes. Proper classroom temperature control enhances productivity and comfort, which is crucial for maintaining focus and effective learning. Sustainable facilities support student health, well-being, and academic success, preparing them for future achievements in a conducive learning environment.

Indoor Air Quality
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a crucial aspect of building design and operation, as it directly impacts occupants' health, comfort, and productivity. Indoor air quality refers to the condition of the air within and around buildings, particularly as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants. Key components of managing IAQ include pollutant source control, ventilation improvement, humidity and temperature control, air filtration, and purification.
Poor IAQ is linked to respiratory diseases, allergies, and other health issues. Studies have shown that better IAQ can improve cognitive function and productivity, particularly in learning environments. By understanding and addressing IAQ issues, we create safer and more sustainable buildings for our District community.

Thermal Comfort
OUSD is actively exploring heat mitigation strategies to improve thermal comfort, safety, and learning conditions across our schools. This work includes identifying potential funding sources and researching infrastructure-based initiatives that can be implemented in the near future.
While OUSD is working internally to identify both passive and active solutions to mitigate against extreme heat, the district also plans to pursue the Extreme Heat Community Resilience Program (EHCRP) grant opportunity this year. This program focuses on supporting infrastructure-based improvements that reduce the impacts of extreme heat on communities. OUSD is partnering with the Sequoia Foundation as a community based organization to assess feasible heat mitigation strategies that could be implemented across district campuses. While we are currently awaiting the Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA), we remain committed to keeping our community informed as this opportunity progresses.
Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
