OUSD’s District-Wide Sustainability Policy

On March 18th, the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Board of Education took a major step forward in climate action, passing a comprehensive district-wide sustainability policy designed to shape the future of Oakland’s schools, students, and communities. OUSD’s sustainability policy supports the District’s commitment to 100% clean energy by 2030 and the phasing out of fossil fuels by 2040. This initiative helps prepare our schools to fight the effects of climate change. The policy reflects the efforts of the Sustainability Task Force and the Sustainability Advisory Council's (SAC) collective efforts to combat the Climate Crisis and its impact on our schools and communities.

OUSD Sustainability Overview

Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) acknowledges the urgent and lasting effects of the global climate crisis. As such, the District is prioritizing the pressing need for creating a socially equitable, economically stable, and climate-resilient school district. The OUSD Facilities Planning and Management Department Sustainability Team is committed to serving the District community through those principles and establishing and preserving an environmentally sustainable school system. As an initial step toward this vision, the OUSD Board adopted the Climate Emergency Action Resolution (CEAR), which directs the Sustainability Team to develop and execute a Sustainability Policy and Plan. This effort also requires collaboration with entities like the City of Oakland, which developed the City’s Equitable Climate Action Plan (ECAP). This partnership ensures a comprehensive and cooperative approach to building a greener, more sustainable Oakland.

The OUSD Sustainability Policy and Plan will be rooted in the following pillars and reflective of  OUSD’s commitment to creating a sustainable and resilient educational environment.
