Culturally Responsive Engagement: Getting to Know Your Latino Students & Families - Part I

“It’s Important to Me”: Integrating Latino History in Elementary School

- Engage in an ethnic studies lesson that is responsive to Latino families and cultural context.

- Identify historical and current educational policies and their impacts on Raza students.
- Learn strategies for creating learning environments that center caring pedagogy.
Supporting Newcomers with Post-Secondary Access and Success
Facilitators: Elizabeth Paniagua, High School Network & Ella May, Oakland International High School

Learning Outcomes:
- Understand post secondary options available to all students including newcomer youth (college and career).
- Understand the process for applying and enrolling in post secondary options.
- Identify key areas that may be roadblocks for newcomers and post secondary access and how to mitigate.
- Learn strategies and tips to help newcomers with the post secondary application and enrollment process.
- Review best practices for matriculation success and retention.
Empowering Boys of Color with Identity & Agency
Facilitators: Jose Jauregui & Myles Asuelo, Zymbolic

Learning Outcomes:
- Use evidence based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) practices to help Young Boys of Color (YBOC) express Identity and exercise Agency.
- Customize structured SEL activities to learn the strengths and challenges of YBOC.
- Utilize this information to frame their educational focus in a way that motivates YBOC to learn.
Supporting Latine LGBTQ Students
Facilitators: Schmian Evans, LGBTQ Specialist & Michael Luna, Social Work Intern
Participant Level: All Levels
Despite making up the largest percentage of OUSD's student population and OUSD's LGBTQ population, Latine LGBTQ students often struggle to find fully safe and supportive spaces. Come to this interactive session to learn basic terms & definitions, statistics, supportive policies/laws and best practices for supporting our Latine LGBTQ student population at school sites.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of LGBTQ terms & definitions.
- Understand the unique barriers/challenges facing Latine LGBTQ students.
- Identify (culturally responsive) best practices for supporting Latine LGBTQ students.
- Demonstrate an initial understanding of OUSD policies and CA laws designed to support LGBTQ youth.

- Analyze current data on Maya Mam students, identifying trends and areas for improvement.
- Learn how to do a needs assessment tailored to Maya Mam students.
- Acquire effective strategies for engaging Maya Mam students and their families, fostering a supportive learning environment.

- Gain an understanding of the historical - continued legacy of solidarity between Black and Brown communities.

- Gain an understanding of Latinas and the areas that affect their mental health.
- Explore strategies for supporting and engaging Latinas in support of positive mental health.
