Celebrating Filipino American Heritage Month in October and Beyond

During the month of October, we celebrate Filipino American Heritage Month to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Filipino Americans, including those in our own school communities.

Here in OUSD, we have hundreds of students, staff, and families with roots and ancestors that go back to the Philippines. Let’s continue celebrating and integrating the Filipino community’s rich culture throughout the school year.

Here are a few ways to honor Filipino American heritage this month and beyond.

Classroom Activities

  • OUSD Filipinx American History Month school resource guide
  • Historical Figures: Highlight Filipino leaders including Larry Itliong and Filipino WWII veterans, who made invaluable contributions to U.S. history.
  • Literature and Art: Introduce students to authors such as Carlos Bulosan (America Is in the Heart) and Baybayin, the pre-colonial Filipino script.
  • Filipino Cuisine: Share insights into Filipino dishes like Adobo and Lumpia to explore the cultural fusion in Filipino food.

Engaging Beyond October

Consider hosting a Filipino Cultural Day, inviting local speakers, or organizing events throughout the year. Every day is an opportunity to inspire students with the diverse cultures that enrich Oakland, deepening cultural understanding and pride.

Thank you for fostering inclusivity and cultural celebration in our schools.
