Transfers

We do not provide ongoing updates, nor do we provide immediate, on the spot approvals. All applications will be processed in the order they are received, and we will meet the timelines established by the Alameda County Board of Education. Generally speaking, this means that applications will be processed within 30 days of receipt.

There are two different time periods for transfers: 1) During the Open Enrollment Period--first week of December through the 15th day of the new school year--families can apply to a new school through the Enrollwise platform at ChooseOUSD.org. These are applications for the next school year, and would not be effective immediately. 2) For OUSD students who need to transfer during the current school year, we are only able to accommodate transfers based on a limited number of reasons, which are listed here. For secondary students (grades 6-12), we only initiate transfers at the end of each marking period, and we do not make transfers after Spring Break. This is to ensure the accuracy and legitimacy of marking period and semester grades and GPA calculations. Students with IEPs in Self-Contained Programs (SCP) follow the same transfer policies as general education students.

It is important to note that there are many Self-Contained Programs: mild-mod, moderate, extensive, counseling enriched, and deaf/ hard of hearing. While the large comprehensive high schools may have every single program, our smaller elementary schools may only have one, or in some cases, none of these programs. If a school does not offer the services outlined in a student’s IEP, the enrollment office will not be able to approve a transfer to a new school.
