Oakland Unified School District

Special Education

Every school in OUSD provides a range of quality services for students with special needs. Although every program is not available at every school site, a full continuum of services is available within the District. Examples of Special Education programs and services may include, but not be limited to the following: assessments and eligibility determinations, individualized case management and monitoring, "pull-out" services (out of classroom), "push-in" services (integrated into the classroom), combinations of instruction in both general education and special education settings, and dedicated special education settings.

When possible, the District attempts to provide each family with their choice of school. Availability is determined based on each student’s Individual Education Program (IEP) and  proximity to neighborhood school, sibling enrollment, enrollment space, program availability and parent options. Each school within the District has an assigned Special Education Network Administrator assist with locating school sites and programs that best match the services outlined in each student’s IEP.

Parents and guardians of students with disabilities are welcome to participate in the enrollment process. If you are not currently enrolled at an OUSD school:

  • When you apply online, upload  the most current agreed-upon and signed IEP along with the enrollment application. For families already enrolled at OUSD school, this year. You do not need to upload the IEP.
  • If you apply in person be sure to bring a copy of your IEP.
  • Designate the appropriate schools that you would like your child to attend. Also indicate on the form that your child receives Special Education services and the type of services he or she will receive. This will assist the Student Welcome Center in ensuring that your application is properly processed.
  • Forms submitted after the deadline will be processed on a space available and program capacity basis.
