OUSD’s Sustainability Department aims to provide all OUSD students, school staff and the community with solutions to promote District-wide sustainability – lessening greenhouse gas emissions throughout the District. The OUSD Sustainability Staff works to improve OUSD schools through our sustainability areas of focus: Energy Efficiency, Water Resistance, Waste Reduction, Green Infrastructure. The OUSD Sustainability Department is committed to promoting student engagement and learning opportunities in our work.
In October 2020, the Oakland Unified School District Board set the following goals:
- 100% clean electricity by 2030
- Phase out the use of fossil fuels by 2040
OUSD has the enormous opportunity to define how our community of stakeholders will show up and take action against the daunting challenges caused or exacerbated by climate change. The declaration of a climate emergency represents a critical step in the district’s journey to begin addressing climate change in a serious, meaningful, and relevant way.
OUSD will adopt commitments to climate action to influence and inspire other organizations, school districts, and public agencies to prioritize climate action, while affording students genuine agency to help lead this work.
The Sustainability Advisory Council (SAC)
The Sustainability Advisory Council (SAC) was established in March 2021, to work closely with all OUSD departments and offices to ensure that support for diversity, equity, and inclusion is integrated into decision-making, planning, and implementation throughout all structures, services, policies, practices, and procedures through the following:
- Co-create an antiracist, comprehensive, ecological sustainability policy with the staff-led district task force for OUSD
- Serve as advocates and ambassadors for Climate Justice in OUSD
SAC Mission Statement: to promote Climate Justice for all students, families, and community members in OUSD and beyond.
