    Hello Sankofa United Families.

Fall is here and learning is in full swing!  There is a lot going on in the coming weeks at Sankofa United.

Conferences and minimum day dismissal next week.  The week of October 3 - 7, we will have a minimum day (1:30 PM) dismissal every day.  (After School Program will run from 1:30 - 6:00 these days.)  We look forward to having a conference with EVERY family and their teacher this week. Please be on the lookout for an invitation from your child’s teacher to sign up for a conference time.

Congratulations to Mr. D!  Our after-school program director, Derrick “Mr. D” Wesby and his wife Victoria welcomed twins, Kairo and Travis, on Thursday, September 22.  While Mr. D is on paternity leave, Ms. Laura and Mr. Eric are sharing leadership with our after-school program.

Community School Manager Appreciation:  Last week was Community School Manager (CSM) Appreciation Week.  Not only are we fortunate to have a CSM role at our school (click here to read more about all a CSM does), but we are doubly fortunate to have Ms. Erica Macklin as our CSM! Check out this interview that went out last week on OUSD social media.

Title I Meeting Follow-Up.  We had a low turnout for our Annual Title One meeting last week. This is in stark contrast to the awesome turnout for Back to School Night.  As a takeaway, moving forward, we are going to prioritize in-person meetings over Zoom this year.  I hope you will all take a minute to review a few things that we discussed at the Title I meeting.  Linked here, they include, our Family Engagement Policy, our School/Family Compact, and the slide deck from last week’s meeting.

School Site Council:  Thanks to the staff and family members who have stepped up to be on our School Site Council (SSC).  Here’s the link to the slide deck from our “Establishment Meeting” last week. (I’ll share the minutes in next week’s family message.)  Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 19, in the library.  All are welcome!

Wishing you all a great week!

    ~ Dennis Guikema, Principal
