Air Quality Overview

  • For the last few years, the Bay Area has experienced a number of days with poor air quality due to fires in Northern California.

For the 2019-20 school year, OUSD is following the the California Department of Education's School Air Quality Activity Recommendations which were created in partnership with the California Air Resources Board, California Air Pollution Control Officers Association, California County Superintendents Educational Services Association, Association of California School Administrators, and California School Boards Association.

To determine local air quality, district staff monitor several websites, including: AirNow and Bay Area Air Quality Management. When the air is particularly bad, district staff check these sites on the hour so as to be able to communicate accurate information to school sites. District staff also consult with surrounding districts and the Alameda County Office of Education to determine what steps to take to minimize the risk for students and staff.

The possibility of closing schools due to smoke is a complex decision and not one that we take lightly. We typically do not consider closing a school unless the air quality index reaches 200, a level deemed "very unhealthy". See the OUSD Air Quality Index for details.

    OUSD Community,

As you know, the health and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority.

As you also know, there are major wildfires burning in Northern California.

Current wind patterns are causing the smoke from those fires to spread across the Bay Area, including Oakland.

Please know that school is NOT cancelled.

However, if the air quality is bad at your student’s school, outdoor activities such as P.E. will be altered or cancelled outright. After school sports programs may be cancelled as well.

Staff has been instructed to keep vulnerable children - those with respiratory problems - inside, and to keep windows and doors closed.

We will continue monitoring the air quality and will send updates if warranted. Below are some links you can use to learn more about air quality and smoke related problems.
