  • Catherine Goddard is a Speech-Language Pathologist who has been working with the Oakland Unified School District since 1998. She specializes in preschool language therapy and language-based reading challenges, but enjoys working in all areas of speech-language therapy including stuttering, articulation, social skills, and diagnosis of speech-language disorders. Catherine is also a mom and loves spending time with her husband, Don, and fourteen year old son, Henry! She is excited to be working at Hoover Elementary again this school year and is looking forward to supervising her intern from San Francisco State University, Ms. Gaby.
  • Gabi is in her third year of teaching at Hoover. Born in Colombia and raised in Vero Beach, FL, she worked as a student teacher throughout her undergraduate studies at Cornell. She majored in human development with a concentration in behavioral neuroscience, which, combined with an education minor, led to an interest in how young people learn. She relocated to the Bay Area in August after completing her masters degree in Massachusetts. She is excited to be working at Hoover Elementary this year and to getting to know the Hoover community!
  • Gillian is in her 12th year of teaching in the Bay Area. After 6 years of classroom teaching in both 3rd and 4th grades, Ms. Bowley moved into a literacy and ELL specialist position. In this role, she taught small-group reading and English Language classes for students in K-7th grades in both San Francisco and Fruitvale, Oakland. She believes deeply in the power of reading to change lives and is thrilled to call herself a Hoover Hawk!
  • He started to volunteer as parent organizer at Hoover back in 2010. He was part of the PTC team, Parent Teacher Club. He was also in the first conversation to bring an official PTA. He became the chair person of the ELAC and SSC. He is currently part of Hoover staff. He works as Community Relations Assistant, Bilingual II. His older daughter graduated Hoover in 2017, and his youngest daughter is in first grade.
  • I moved to the the Bay Area about twenty years ago in order to attend college at Notre Dame de Namur University, where I earned my bachelors degree in English and Political Science. It was there that I met my husband of 12 years. I worked for almost 20 years in retail management as a trainer and a district manager. Last year I decided that I was going to go back to school and get my teaching credential, so I have been substitute teaching while I earn my credential. I am very happy to join the team at Hoover Elementary.
  • Jacqueline graduated from Oakland High School in 2000. She then worked at Rising Montessori School in Alameda for 2 years as a Teacher’s Assistant and in the after school program. She joined the Hoover family in 2008 and has been with us ever since. She started off working as a Clerical sub and then moved into being a Bilingual Clerk. After 4 years she decided to take some extra classes and was promoted to an Administrative Assistant position. She enjoys working with the staff, the families and students. She loves to see the children evolve from Kindergarten until their 5th grade promotion. It brings such joy to her heart to see their accomplishments. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her family and giving back to the community.
  • LaTasha Ellison has been at Hoover Elementary for nine years teaching fourth and fifth grade. Before LaTasha came to Hoover Elementary, she worked at Community United Elementary for four years teaching second grade and kindergarten. LaTasha served on the Instructional Leadership Team for two years, working on implementing new practices to improve the overall instruction of the school. LaTasha has a strong classroom management style in which she teaches her students to become independent learners that are consciously trying to make positive choices at all times.
  • Lissette Averhoff is an East Coast transplant who loves Oakland and is dedicated to the Oakland community. She came into teaching through Teach for America. When her 2 year commitment ended, she decided to stay in education and taught for 5 years at KIPP Academy in the Bronx. After visiting Oakland for a summer, she decided to make it her home and taught at ACORN Woodland Elementary School for 7 years and as a Math Specialist for 2 years. She has been bringing her expertise and passion to Hoover Elementary since 2015.
  • Mark joined the Hoover teaching staff in 1994. He has taught 1st, 4th, and 5th grades and has been a literacy coach for the district. Mark graduated from UC Davis, got his teaching credential at Holy Names in Oakland, and was in the first cohort of the Principles Leadership Institute at UC Berkeley. Mark was born and raised in Oakland, graduating from Skyling High School. He lives in Oakland with his wife and two kids, who both attend Oakland public schools.
  • Mike entered the teaching profession in 2016 after many years in the corporate world. He is following his passion to educate and develop young people, particularly in Oakland, where he resides. Mike is teaching 3rd grade at Hoover Elementary.Mike was born and raised in Michigan, and is a graduate of Michigan State University. With his wife, Tiffany, he has lived in Oakland since 2001. They have 2 young twin boys, Clay and Reid. Mike is proud to be an Oakland Teacher, and even prouder to be a Hoover Hawk.
  • Ms. Barich has been teaching kindergarten at Hoover Elementary since 2015. She grew up in San Francisco and has lived in Oakland since 2009. Ms. Barich graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design from California College of the Arts and earned her Masters degree in Elementary Education from the University of the Pacific. Before teaching at Hoover, she participated in the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute (BATTI) where she worked as a Teaching Assistant in first, second, and third grade classrooms. She has also worked as a Montessori preschool teacher and children's art instructor. In her free time, she loves spending time with her family, being outdoors, and making art.
  • Ms. Diana was born in Los Angeles and raised in Oakland. She experienced first hand the education within Oakland Unified School District as she is a graduate from Havenscourt Middle and Oakland High School. She has worked at Hoover since 2009. She has held many roles: academic mentor, activities coordinator, family liaison, and for the last four years she has been the after school program coordinator. She enjoys working with the families, staff, and primarily the students. Seeing them grow into young adults that give back to their community is something that she is passionate about. Ms. Diana looks forward to providing a safe space for students to continue thriving in this ever changing world. In her personal time Ms. Diana likes to spend time with her family.
  • Ms. Duong was born and raised in San Francisco, where she currently lives. She graduated from UC San Diego where she got her degrees in Psychology and Education. She received her teaching credential from San Diego State University. She has been teaching since 2013 at Hoover, and taught at another school the year before that. She believes that everyone is a learner and wants to pass on to her students a love for school that she had growing up. She enjoys arts and crafts, jogging, and rooting for the Giants and Warriors!
  • Ms. McPeek joined us in 2015 as our engineering teacher. She teaches FOSS and engineering for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) class and supports our staff teaching STEAM as our lead science teacher. She is excited for another year of bring STEAM to our school in the classroom, and through inclass activities and outside experiences.
  • Ms. Sbani is in her second year at Hoover Elementary school. She teaches TK/K combo class, and brings with her a passion for early education and literacy development. For the past two years Ms. Sbani has taught Kindergarten in Oakland, prior to that she taught Reading Intervention in Alameda Unified, tutored middle and high school students, and developed multi-disciplinary summer camp curriculum for grades K-2.
  • Ms. Sheys is in her first year teaching third grade at Hoover. She graduated from Smith College with a degree in studio art, taught art in Berkeley and Oakland for two years, and then went on to earn her Master's in teaching from the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute. She is so excited to bring her creativity and love of learning into the new school year!
  • Oakland native, Alison Streich has been making music all her life. She is a mother, a teacher, a violinist and a composer. She has been teaching for Oakland Unified School District for over 24 years! In 2011 she founded Oakland Spirit Orchestra features performances of Oakland's young musicians all around the city. When she is not making music in the classroom, she keeps a bustling performance schedule playing her violin with various bands and ensembles. The highlight of her teaching career was being named OUSD's 2014-2015 "Teacher of the Year!"
  • Raised in Berkeley, Ms. Emam graduated from University of Pacific with a biology-math major. She completed her teaching credential at UOP, and taught for several years before returning to the Bay Area. Ms. Emam (then Nelsen) joined the staff at Hoover in 1987, and taught first grade before being pulled out of the classroom. She has worked as a literacy coach, math coach, science teacher as well as a support staff for all the many tasks that help Hoover run smoothly. She first retired in 2003, but has been asked to stay on part time to help with the budget, compliance, testing, and a host of other assignments. Both of her children are Oakland High School graduates. A dual citizen of Egypt, Ms. Emam will gradually wean herself away from the Hoover family as she spends more time overseas.
  • Wanda Stewart is working with all of the students at Hoover Elementary as the Garden Life Educator. She will work with students on learning to grow food and healthy bodies, minds and spirits in the School's own community garden.Across her professional career, "Miss Wanda" has worked in many different school environments including ten years employed in Emery Unified School District administration. Her past work related to student development, parent engagement and community outreach. Now as a Master Gardener and certified Permaculture Designer, she is most excited about returning to schools by growing the Hoover Community Garden as a transformational model for what’s possible in an urban environment. She knows in her heart that we must all “grow the power” - together.
