Advanced Placement and Honors Classes

  • Skyline has a vibrant Advanced Placement and Honors program open to all motivated students!

Advanced Placement (AP) classes are college-level courses with a curriculum standardized by College Board. They are available in a wide variety of subjects that you can take while still in high school. They offer you challenging course work and exposure to the college experience. Because the classes are college level, an extra grade point is awarded upon completion. In other words, instead of a 4.0 for an A grade at the end of the semester, an A grade in an AP class is weighted as a 5.0, and subsequently a 4.0 for a B grade, 3.0 for a C grade, and so on.

After taking an advanced placement class, AP students will take a national AP exam in the subject/s they have studied.  AP tests are scheduled for the middle of May. The results of the AP tests are important markers for the students who take them, as a passing grade of 3, 4, or 5 will qualify for college credit! (Exact credits vary slightly by university/college.) AP students will receive notice from their teachers on how to register for their AP tests in September.

Additionally - it is recommended that AP students also schedule to take an SAT Subject Test in the same subject as their AP class in either May or June of the same year. Top universities often request one or two SAT Subject Test scores in their applications.

Honors Placement (HP) classes are advanced-level opportunities in an honors-designated class, or within a regular class, where a standard class curriculum is supplemented in order to give students who request an honors-level class additional academic challenges and assignments. Honors students then receive an extra grade point for completing the honors-level work, just as in AP classes.

Whether taking AP or HP classes, students gain exposure to higher learning and experience in challenging themselves and testing their academic skills. Skyline encourages all students to consider taking an AP or an HP class - or two or three! Plan ahead for 2020-2021!
