• On May 2, 2022, Shanthi Gonzales, the District 6 Director on the Board of Education, resigned her position, thereby creating a vacancy. The Board has elected to fill the vacancy by making a provisional appointment to serve out the remainder of the term (through January 2, 2023), as permitted by Education Code section 5091. Any resident of District 6, who is registered to vote and is 18 years of age or older, may apply.

Application Process & Timeline

  • Upon submittal of all applications, the process and timeline to make the provisional appointment is as follows:

    • Week of June 13: The Board will vote to select applicants to be interviewed. All applicant materials (with personal contact information redacted) will be included in the Board agenda packet for public review.
    • Week of June 20: The Board will hold a meeting to interview final applicants. The interviews are expected to be in person. The interview will include no more than 12 questions, which will be published in advance in the Board agenda packet. The interview for each applicant shall end after 20 minutes regardless of whether the applicant has responded to all questions.
    • Week of June 27: The Board will vote to provisionally appoint one of the final applicants to serve out the term for the vacant District 6 seat.

Before taking office, the individual provisionally appointed will need to be sworn in by the City Clerk and would take office immediately thereafter. That individual would serve out the remainder of the term (through January 2, 2023) unless there is a successful petition to call a special election.
