For the first time in 22 years, state education leaders say OUSD is ready to manage its own finances without state oversight. Superintendent Tony Thurmond and State Board President Linda Darling‑Hammond both support Alameda County’s recommendation that we can exit receivership.

What we’ve accomplished so far

  • Paid off our state loans.
  • Cut next year’s projected deficit from over $95 million to just under $12.5 million.
  • Upgraded our budget rating to "Qualified," a major step above "Negative."

What’s next

We still spend more than we receive, so we must keep following the Board's "3Rs" budget plan to address the remaining deficit and invest in staff pay and student programs.

Thank you for supporting our students and schools as we work toward lasting financial health
