Oakland Unified School District

Maximus Simmons

My name is Maximus Simmons, and I am a junior at Oakland High School in the Law & Social Justice pathway. I have been an OUSD student since 2013 when I first attended Sequoia Elementary. After that, I moved on to Edna Brewer Middle School where I spoke at my graduation about growing beyond middle school. Next year, I will graduate from Oakland High.

I have always felt compelled to help people, so much so, that I now say my whole purpose in life is to help anyone and everyone no matter their past or future. Everyone deserves love and care. I now spend most of my time volunteering, teaching restorative justice, and meeting with other leaders. Restorative justice (RJ) is one of the most important things in my life. I have been practicing RJ for three years now, holding circles at two national restorative justice conferences while also helping set up RJ at Oakland High. I have been a delegate for the All City Council (ACC) Student Union since middle school. I joined the ACC leadership team as a sophomore as Culture and Climate Director helping to establish community within ACC.

Being Student Director on the Board of Education means speaking for those who feel they don’t have a voice. Representing every student in OUSD is an important responsibility, which I take very seriously. Our 34,000 students all have their own challenges and goals. I promise to amplify every students’ experience, and ensure that the school district provides the resources and support needed to ensure all of our students graduate with a clear mind and ready for success. My priority as student director is to make sure restorative justice flourishes in Oakland like it did in the past. I am so excited for this school year. Thank you!
