Oakland Unified School District

Rachel Latta

Director Rachel Latta was born and raised in the Bay Area. She says both of her parents came to California for a better life - her mother from rural Indiana and her father from the Philippines. She is a nurse/midwife at a community clinic, where her focus is providing the best possible health care to immigrant communities.

Director Latta is a mother of three, a 7th grader at West Oakland Middle School, a 4th grader at Prescott Elementary, and a preschooler. She is an enthusiastic parent volunteer and advocate who believes public schools serving all children well are not just places where children learn, but also community centers that strengthen and revitalize neighborhoods. Over the last 8 years, she has been advocating with Equity Allies for OUSD and Integrated Schools, working to address systemic inequities in our schools and how individuals can help create change.

"OUSD has some big challenges coming up: ongoing budget challenges while planning for the end of state receivership, an upcoming superintendent transition, and the constant push to close schools without addressing underlying inequities in our school choice and funding systems," Director Latta explained. "I decided to run for school board to use the knowledge and relationships I have gained through eight years of organizing in community to make durable, equity-based changes in the District while centering families, students, and staff."
