What is HSE?

The letters stand for High School Equivalency Test. California has approved the use of two high school equivalency tests (GED® and HiSET®) for students 18 years old and older and 17 years old in some instance.  Students who attend the Oakland Adult & Career Education Program/HSE Test Prep classes can take either test and must be age 18 years and older. The High School Equivalency (HSE) Certificate is recognized in all fifty states as the equivalent to a high school diploma.

What are the test formats?

The GED Test is offered on the computer only. Students should have basic computer skills and keyboarding. The HiSET test is offered on the computer or by paper.

What is tested? How long is the test?

  GED Test

·         Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA): 150 minutes, including a 10-minute break and 45 minutes written response

·         Mathematical Reasoning: 90 minutes

·         Science: 90 minutes, including a 10-minute written response

·         Social Studies: 90 minutes

  HiSET Test

·         Language Arts Reading: 65 minutes (80 minutes for Spanish)

·         Language Arts Writing: 120 Minutes — Format: Multiple-choice and an essay prompt

·         Mathematics:   90 Minutes

·         Science Time:  80 Minutes

·         Social Studies: 70 Minutes

Do I have to take all tests at the same time?

No, you may take the tests separately, in the order you choose. You may also take 2 tests on the same day.  The teacher will let you know where and when testing will take place.

How much will it cost?

Students who participate in OACE GED/HiSET Test Preparation classes can test for free (However, a student must have 12 or more hours of class attendance).

If I do not pass a test, can I take it again?

Yes, each subject test 3 times.

GED: you are given two subsequent retests, with no restrictions between retakes. If you fail the third or any subsequent retest, you must wait 60 days for your next attempt. 

HiSET: Retakes must occur within 12 calendar months of your initial attempt. After your two discounted retakes, you will need to wait at least 60 days, pay the full retake price and then you will receive two more discounted retakes.

How long will it take to pass all the tests and get my HSE Certificate?

Depends Upon:

• Your prior educational experience and skills you bring to your study
• Meaningful and regular attendance, your personal focus and effort
