Sanctuary District

OUSD is a Sanctuary District

When we say Every Student Thrives! at Oakland Unified School District it means we stand behind our students no matter where they were born or the barriers they have overcome to be here. We cherish the cultural richness in our District and make no exceptions when it comes to including learners with a wide variety of backgrounds and needs.

We're a Sanctuary State

Former Governor, Jerry Brown, signed landmark “sanctuary state” legislation on October 5, 2017, vastly limiting who state and local law enforcement agencies can hold, question and transfer at the request of federal immigration authorities.

The OUSD Sanctuary Resolution, adopted in December 2016 affirms that we will do everything possible to ensure students and families are safe at school regardless of immigration status.
