COVID Information
-
Updated August 17, 2022
Masks are highly recommended for all students and staff while indoors. Please note that mask guidelines may change at any point during the school year based on a decision of the Board of Education, in consultation with health orders by the county’s public health department.
To limit the transmission of COVID and the safety of all, we continue to encourage all staff, scholars, and family members to get vaccinated and boosted, in addition to wearing a mask. Vaccination locations are on the OUSD COVID site.
COVID-19 vaccinations are not currently required for students to register for or attend school in person for the 22-23 school year.
Families can pre-register for COVID testing at the OUSD COVID site.
At-home test kits will also be available at all schools for distribution to staff and students during back-to-school events, and for use prior to everyone arriving for the first day of classes.
We will only offer a full in-person instructional program this year. If you desire a virtual option, please reach out to enroll@ousd.org as soon as possible to gauge space and available for a virtual program.
COVID FAQs
-
What are the rules about wearing masks at school?
CDPH still strongly recommends indoor masking at schools for all staff and students. At this time, Alameda County does not require masking indoors, but it could change this policy at any time, at which point indoor masking will again be required for all staff and students.
Staff members who are returning from a positive-case isolation period between days 5 & 10 after testing positive or developing symptoms, whichever was sooner, will need to mask around others indoors, and staff members who have had 3+ exposures will also need to mask for 14 days.

How can OUSD staff and families access COVID testing?
Use of rapid tests (instead of PCR tests) is generally recommended by CDPH; We have at-home tests for all staff and students to pick up on site upon request. We are also keeping regional testing hubs open for any staff, student, or family member who cannot pick up a test at their school site and needs to access testing. We will distribute at-home tests to all school sites before every major school holiday, including Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break. Additional distributions may also be planned for surges or periods of high transmission, as determined by the county public health department.
- Everyone can also order additional at-home test kits for their entire household from the federal government.
- Kaiser members can also pick up at-home tests free of charge at Kaiser or order them from the kp.org website.
While there are a great number of tests in our inventory at this time, we are still being asked to prioritize those tests moving forward.
- Priority 1: unvaccinated staff members, who are still required to test weekly
- Priority 2: symptomatic staff or students, who need to test to return/stay at school
- Priority 3: exposed staff or students, who would like to test following a known exposure
- Please ensure this 3rd round of tests is provided just for priority testing, as outlined above, to conserve supplies until the next round of at-home tests is provided by CDPH.

What are the protocols for positive cases?
Please report any positive case to your school. Staff should report positive cases to contacttracing_staff@ousd.org (if positive individual is an employee) or contacttracing_student@ousd.org (if the positive individual is a student). Our central team will continue to send out notifications to the positive individual with instructions about isolation and will notify the exposed staff members and school communities about positive cases.
Here is a flowchart explaining the protocols for what to do if symptomatic or positive.
-
What resources will OUSD offer for families and staff to get vaccinated, the best way to protect ourselves and our community from COVID?
We strongly recommend that all staff and students get vaccinated and boosted to maximize their protection against COVID-19. We will continue to offer vaccine clinics at our school sites throughout the year. COVID-19 vaccinations are currently not required for any student to attend school in person.
Staff are required to be fully vaccinated (2 shots of Pfizer/Moderna or 1 shot of J&J) or to submit proof of weekly tests to the Talent Department.
-
Will we still use air purifiers? If so, will we still replace the filters?
We will continue to use and maintain our upgraded air filtration systems in our schools and offices, including in-room air purifiers and MERV-13 filters in built-in HVAC systems. Filters will be provided, when requested by the safety lead.

Do I need to re-consent for testing for my student in Primary?
Go to https://my.primary.health/a/ousd and enter the student’s 6-digit Student ID number (without the leading 00) where it asks for the ‘Access Code.’ The last name and date of birth should match the info in Aeries. Once this page is filled out, you will get the new consent form for 22-23.
If the student isn't found, it is possible they were not registered last year, and will need to set up a new account in Primary at https://my.primary.health/r/ousd.
-
Are parents/visitors allowed on campus?
Yes, visitors are welcome on campus, as long as they follow all site protocols for signing in/out. They do not need to complete a health screening questionnaire.
-
Do field trip chaperones have to be vaccinated?
Yes, field trip chaperones, like Oakland Ed Fund volunteers and OUSD staff/contractors, must be vaccinated.
-
Are there resources for families about the safety protocols for this year?
Yes, there is a cheat sheet that describes our protocols for what to do if someone is positive, symptomatic, or exposed.
