• Ms. E and class Oakland offers transitional kindergarten (TK) for all children turning five in the fall. We are pleased that Emerson is hosting this program. This is a play-based program focusing on social and emotional readiness for kindergarten. At Emerson our dedicated TK class has a small class size and an experienced kindergarten teacher.

    What is Transitional Kindergarten?
The Transitional Kindergarten program (TK) is designed to meet the needs of children turning five in the fall (between September 1st and December 2nd). TK gives our youngest Kindergarteners a head start and provides them with an opportunity to learn and grow in an environment tailored to meet their academic and social needs. The TKers will get two years of kindergarten -- one play-based year focused on social and emotional readiness, and the second focused on the academics that prepare every kindergartener to excel in first grade.

California recently passed a new law, “The Kindergarten Readiness Act” (SB 1381), that changes the age when children are eligible to enter Kindergarten.Under this new law, by 2014-15, children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1st in order to enroll in traditional Kindergarten. Previously, children could enter Kindergarten so long as they turned 5 years old by December 2nd. The law will phase in the new Kindergarten age requirement over the next three years by changing the Kindergarten cutoff date as follows:

2012-13: entering Kindergarteners must turn five by Nov. 1st
entering Kindergarteners must turn five by Oct. 1st
entering Kindergarteners must turn five by Sep. 1st

For the 2013-2014 school year, parents of students who turn 5 between October 1st and December 2nd, 2012 have priority to choose to register their children for Transitional Kindergarten. Children with earlier birthdays may attend Transitional Kindergarten once all children with October/November birthdays are served. Transitional Kindergarten is part of the public school system and is free to participating students; registration in the TK program is optional.
