John Harrington

School: Oakland Technical High School

Since 2008, Mr. Harrington has made his home in the Bay Area, raising a family while continuing to perform, record and teach music in OUSD at Redwood Heights Elementary School, Grass Valley Elementary School, and the OUSD Summer Jazz Camp. He has performed with Big O (OUSD Music Teacher Big Band) the SFJazz Monday Night Band, Stop Time, and Orbital Quintet. He has recently accepted the position of Director of Music at Oakland Technical High School 2020-2021. 

Mr. Harrington teaches Piano/Voice, Guitar, Mixed Orchestra Ensemble, and Advanced Jazz Band.

Stephanie Holmes

School: Edna Brewer Middle School

Since 2011 Stephanie Holmes has been the Director of Orchestras at Edna Brewer Middle School in Oakland, California. Ms. Holmes co-founded the all-city Muse Vivo orchestra, in partnership with the Oakland East Bay symphony. This orchestra serves as a vehicle to membership in the Oakland Youth Orchestra. In 2012 the Metropolitan Opera named Ms. Holmes lead educator for their Live in HD program, and she recently generated a new curriculum with the Met Opera Education. Ms. Holmes has served as guest conductor to many regional orchestras across Virginia, South Carolina, and California.

I teach orchestral music (three cohorts by grade). Music Explorer (General Music with a Ukulele focus - 6th and 8th grade). I love teaching music to young people!

Zachary Pitt-Smith

School: Edna Brewer Middle School

In addition to being a professional woodwinds instrumentalist, I have been the director of bands at Edna Brewer Middle for fifteen years. I direct the Oakland Eastside All-Star Ensemble (OEASE) and serve on the local and state boards of directors for California Music Educators Association as Multicultural Representative and Urban Schools Programs Representative. I was recognized as the Oakland Teacher of the Year in 2013 and am a semifinalist for the 2022 Music Educator Grammy Award.

Currently I perform with the Brazilian instrumental choro ensemble Grupo Falso Baiano and Oakland Samba Revue.

I teach general music through an Orff-Schulwerk lens, we focus on the creative practice of ensemble music making, learning by ear. I also teach three levels of Concert Band, and two Jazz Bands. Stephanie Holmes leads the string orchestra program and also teaches two general music classes with a focus on ukulele. We have an after-school Chinese Orchestra as well that meets once a week.

Randy Porter

School: Roosevelt Middle School

Randy Porter grew up in Oakland, and has been an active performer for over 30 years. He has been a member of many bands, and performed on many recordings as well. His primary professional mission is to dedicate himself to teaching music in Oakland, and many of his students have gone on to perform to great acclaim.

Mr. Porter teaches band, orchestra, jazz band, guitar, rock band, and choir. In addition, Roosevelt has a comprehensive daily after school music program including chamber music, mariachi, jazz, and private and small group instruction from some of the most highly acclaimed teachers in the Bay area.

Mx. San-Chez has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre and has been most recently seen working with Bay Area Children's Theatre on both the stage and classroom environments.

At Westlake we strive to give students the knowledge and practical skills to be a successful artist whether that's visual or performing. We also stive to mold over all better humans by teaching confidence, character, and empathy. Our classes include Visual Art, Drama, Choir, Dance, and Instrumental Music which showcases students work 3 times a year with our Winter FAN (Fine Arts Night) , Black History Month Celebration, and Spring FAN.
