Andria Kemp-Sellers

    Transitional Kindergarten

    Ms. Kemp-Sellers is an OUSD graduate who has been teaching for over 10 years. Prior to teaching TK, she had a focus on special education. 


    Zakiya Brooks

    Kindergarten/TK Combo

    Ms. Brooks has an undergraduate degree from Cal State University East Bay amd a Master's in Education from Univerity of the Pacific. She started working with OUSD 2005 as an Intervention Specialist, and remained in the role for eight years. Prior to coming to Emerson in 2010, she worked at Manzanita SEED and Cleveland Elementary School. She has taught transitional kindergarten and kindergarten.


    Kasondra Walsh


    Ms. Walsh began her teaching career in the arts. She began teaching Pre-K dance classes at local Park and Recreation Centers and developing/teaching after-school dance enrichment programs. She joined the Emerson staff in 2014 in the Pre-K STARS classroom, worked as the school's science teacher, and a 2nd grade teacher before starting kindergarten in 2017. She has also been a teaching artist at Berkeley Playhouse since 2013.


    Hannah Galvin


    Ms. Galvin has taught with Kindergarten, as well as 1st, 4th, and 5th grades. She is especialy interested in integrating art, theater, and puppetry into the curriculum. 


    Jessica Price

    Ms. Price graduated from Florida A&M Univeristy. She taught internationally for two years and has taught in the states since 2014. She loves poetry and time spent with family and friends.

    Peter Limata

    2nd Grade

    Mr. Limata was born and raised in Lusaka, Zambia, where he had a career in accounting before moving to the U.S. He has been teaching at Emerson for 5 years, since the 2015-16 school year. Before becoming a teacher, he worked as a volunteer classroom aide, afterschool coordinator, and soccer coach. He enjoys playing soccer, road biking, playing scrabble, watching sports,spending time with family and friends, and loves to travel.


    Sydney Dexter

    3rd Grade

    Originally from Southern California, Ms. Dexter moved to the Bay Area after graduating from The University of Texas at Austin, and hasn't looked back! She has been teaching at Emerson since 2017, and has loved every second of it. When she is not teaching, Ms. Dexter can be found reading, running, spending time outside, or working on do-it-yourself projects. 


    Allison Grill

    3rd Grade

    Ms. Grill moved to the Bay Area from the East Coast in 2009 and has been working in schools ever since. She taught outdoor education from 2011-2015 before moving to the East Bay to enter a Credential/Masters program through the Bay Area Teacher's Training Institute. Ms. Grill has been teaching at Emerson since 2017 and loves integrating outdoor education into her curriculum. When she's not teaching, she can be found playing with her two cats, visiting her family on the East Coast, or wandering around Lake Merritt looking at birds.

    Michelle Beal

    5th Grade

    Before coming to Emerson, Ms. Beal worked in sports and fitness, coaching tennis and doing mentoring and tutoring work for 18 years.



    Mikayla Logan

    Technology Prep Teacher

    Ms. Mikayla has been working with youth through programs at the YMCA since 2005. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences. She started an afterschool program for middle schoolers from Edna Brewer in 2013 and starting working at Emerson in 2016. When not at school, she enjoys camping, snowboarding, traveling, and time with friends and family. She plans to spend a month in 2020 in South Africa studying Great White Sharks. 



    Verna Springer

    Umoja Village Afterschool Program

    Ms. Springer has spent 20 years at Bay Area Community Resources, where she has been a leader in supporting students and families in Oakland Unified School District. She is recipient of the 2015 State of California Department of Education Afterschool Division Expanded Learning Visionary Leadership Award and has been honored by the Alameda County Board Of Education & Alameda County Superintendent Of Schools with the Public Education Service Award in 2015.  


    Jason Hawkins

    Academic Mentor & PE & Recess Coach

    Before becoming an academic mentor in 2019, Mr. Hawkins worked for the Emerson afterschool program for 3 years. 


    Antoinette Holland

    Administrative Assistant

    Ms. Holland has worked for OUSD in various administrative positions for over 20 years  and joined Emerson in 2019.


    Sandra Burton

    Attendance Clerk

    Prior to coming to Emerson in 2016, Ms. Burton worked at Highland Hospital as a medical scheduler.


    Christen Herndandez

    Instructional Support Specialist 3rd-5th Grade Blended Inclusion

    Ms. Hernandez graduated from Mills College where she studied child development and urban education. She worked at the Mills College Children’s School in the second and third grade classrooms. She has been a resident of the Bay Area for most of her life. 


    Krista Denman

    K-2 SDC Inclusion

    Ms. Denman has been working with children and families for almost 15 years. After obtaining her undergraduate degree, she took a job at a family homeless shelter as a resident manager, and later transitioned to their afterschool program as a program coordinator. She has both a special education credential and a Master's in Education. She enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and two small children. 


    Chris Hill

    Paraprofessional TK-2nd Grade Blended Inclusion

    Mr. Hill moved to the Bay Area in 2017. Prior to that, he spent 15 years working with kindergarten and first grade English Language Learners in the Bronx.


    Ashley Ikeda


    Ms. Ikeda is a Marriage and Family Therapist (license #93897), with East Bay Agency for Children. She has been working with students and families since 2015 and enjoys working most with elementary grade students. She is also in the process of obtaining a Trauma certificate at JFK University.


    Ms. Haram Jameel ("Roma")

    Pre-K Verbal Behavior SDC

    Ms Jameel has been substitute teaching for OUSD for the last four years. She has lived in Oakland for eighteen years, and during that time she raised four boys to adulthood.  Ms Jameel has a BA in Business Administration from the University of Sudan for Technology. BA in Child Development from Mills College and a Masters of Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood Special Education also from Mills College.


    Mia Boykin

    STIP Sub Teacher

    In 2019, Ms. Boykin, moved to the Bay Area from Los Angeles where she had worked as a 6th grade reading and writing teacher for two years. 


    Dr. Geri Murphy

    School Psychologist

    Dr. Murphy is originally from southern California, where she attended USC for her B.A., M.S., teaching and PPS credentials. After being a school psychologist for a while, she entered Claremont Graduate School (now University) to attain a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology. She loves travel, writing, art, and music.  


    Ms. Mari Reyes

    K-2 Verbal Behavior SDC

    Ms. Mari is a native of Spain, and a mother of two. In 2005, she graduated from the Universitat de Barcelona, Spain with a B.A. in English. She has been teaching the K-2 Verbal Behavior (VB) SDC class at Emerson since 2017. From 2009-2016, she worked as an ISS for grades PreK to second grade. Currently, she is pursuing her mod-severe Special Education teaching credential and her master’s degree with a focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder at CSU-East Bay. She enjoys cooking, traveling, and taking naps!


    Aiste Solly

    Resource Specialist

    Ms. Solly teaches K-5 students who need additional academic supports and individualized instruction in core academic subjects. A graduate of UC, Berkeley and San Francisco State University, she went through the Oakland Teaching Fellows Program in 2007. Her experience as an English Language Learner (ELL) allows her the opportunity to connect with students who are speakers of other languages and are learning how to survive and thrive in an English-speaking world. 


    Josie Sommer

    SDC Inclusion Teacher, 3rd-5th Grade

    Ms. Sommer has lived in Oakland since 1988 and in that time she has taught a wide range of age groups — from Kindergarten through adults. Originally from Philadelphia, she has degrees from Temple University, San Francisco State University, and Cal State East Bay. She has two adult sons.
