Emergency Preparedness Training on Active ShooterPer Board Resolution: 1718-0174
Who is responsible for taking Emergency Preparedness Training (Active Shooter Training)?
Board Resolution 1718-0174 – School Safety requires that all cabinet-level leaders, school and office site leaders and front office staff to obtain and stay current on emergency preparedness training (including active shooter training) and to prepare their site staff (including substitute educators) and students with age and role-appropriate instructions and lock down/out drills as part of their annual school and office site safety plans; for a copy of the OUSD Board of Education Board Approved Resolution please click HERE.
The training must be completed by no later than within six weeks from the start of each school year or within the date of hire, whichever is later, for all individuals in the roles listed above. All other District employees are strongly encouraged, but are not required, to complete the training.
This means the Active Shooter training must be completed by the following deadlines:
- 2018 - 2019 school year: December 28, 2018 (extension from original date)
- 2019 - 2020 school year: September 23, 2019
How does OUSD deliver Active Shooter Training?
OUSD is providing a standardized online training to all staff through its partnership with Keenan Safe Schools. It is self-guided and each employee is responsible for taking the entire training independently. Instructions for getting to the training follow below.
How long does the online training take to complete?
The training takes approximately 45 minutes to complete including the required quiz.
Do I need to send an email to Police Services or print my certificate to show I completed the training?
The Emergency Preparedness Manager will receive an automatic notice when you have completed your training so there is no need to email your certificate to Police Services. Feel free to print a certificate of completion for your own records, if you wish to do so. Please check with your immmediate supervisor to see if a certificate should be printed for your supervisor's records.
I already know this material - can I just skip to the quiz and "challenge" the course?
No, the Board Resolution states that the material needs to be delivered as part of the annual school and office site safety plan each year, so please plan to watch the presentation, answer any embedded questions and complete the quiz at the end. Do not skip or fast-forward through sections as this will trigger sections to start over, and tends to create errors that make the whole experience take even longer. The material is updated regularly to address user and expert input, and is worth watching!
How do I access the training?
- The training is available online through Keenan Safe Schools. To enter the system you will type in your username which is your OUSD Employee E-mail address, (First.Last@ousd.org). Then press Log In.
- If your role is required to take the training the course will automatically appear in your list of assigned courses upon login. For all others, search for the course entitled, Emergency Management-Active Shooter (Full Course).
- Complete all steps of the training in either English or Spanish.
