How To Become a Teacher

  • What do I need to become a teacher?Teach in OUSD

    Please visit the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for more information. Requirements are:

       1. Bachelor's Degree

       2. Meet the basic skills requirement (through one of the following: 
           CBEST, SAT, ACT, CSU EAP or EPT/ELM, or math and English AP exams). 

       3. Teaching Credential

              Full-time teacher: Clear, preliminary, intern, or emergency teaching permit*.

              Substitute teacher: Emergency 30-day Substitute Teaching Permit

                        

                          *For those who do not hold a California teaching credential, if you have a background in the
                          subject area(s) that you wish to teach, it could be possible to teach before you have a credential.

    College Students: You can be a substitute teacher NOW!

    Please visit the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for more information.   

    1. 90+ semester units completed

       2. Verification of current enrollment

       3. Meet the basic skills requirement (through one of the following: 
           CBEST, SAT, ACT, CSU EAP or EPT/ELM, or math and English AP exams). 

       4. Apply with CTC and pass background check.
