OUSD Site Wellness Champions lead implementation of the District Wellness Policy and work on specific health and wellness systems and programs at Oakland schools. Champions are recruited, trained, and supported by the Wellness Unit, in partnership with a committed school site administration.
In 2018-19, there were over 110 Site Wellness Champions at 53 schools. Champions focus on creating site wellness plans and councils, and some focus on the following additional areas:
"Harvest" Program (Elementary Nutrition/Garden) Champions partner with FoodCorps service members to:
- Coordinate garden and nutrition education lessons
- Steward gardens
- Lead taste tests and cooking demonstrations and make connections to the cafeteria
Safe Routes to School Champions organize at least one major event at their school, such as International Walk or Roll to School Day, a Golden Sneaker Contest, or Bike to School Day.
Staff Wellness Champions lead efforts to promote physical, emotional, and social wellness for all staff at the site. Champions coordinate activities that build community and connectedness among school site staff.
Elementary Physical Activity Champions lead Healthy Recess and other physical activity events at their school site.
