Mountain Bike Club - Boys and Girls

  • During the 2015-2016 school year, Skyline officially launched its stand alone Mountain Biking Team racing in the National Interscholastic Cycling Association's NorCal High School Cycling League South Conference.
Our mission is to teach student-athletes a new sport, foster the continued growth of sport they may already love, get them outdoors in nature on the neighboring trails and make lasting friendships. As a club team there are costs associated with racing; however, no students will be turned away due to financial barriers or the inability to supply their own bike.
Our season begins in December continues through May.  Practices are Tuesday and Thursday after school and Sunday mornings. The team rides and learns the trails in Joaquin Miller Park, Redwood Regional Park, and Anthony Chabot Regional Park. Races begin in February and run through May.  Races are regional and located at amazing mountain biking sites in larger Bay Area including, Ft. Ord(Monterey), Granite Bay(Folsom), 5 Springs Ranch(Petaluma), Laguna Seca(Monterey) and State Championships in Los Olivos.  Families are welcome and encouraged to support us at the races in our "pit zone."
Our team for the 2015-2016 school year is more than 20 riders strong with 14 of our team members racing this season. Many of our student-athletes are new to mountain biking, however, we do have a few sophomores and juniors that have been racing 2 or more years.
Our league has a national governing body, The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) which has launched 19 leagues across the country in this burgeoning sport since its founding in 2009. High school mountain biking has taken off in Oakland due to our proximity to the trails and the out reach efforts of our citywide team, Oakland Composite.  Their support has been instrumental in getting Skyline's school based team launched.
Our supporters have been instrumental to our inaugural season. Endless Cycles in Castro Valley have been very supportive in servicing the loaner bikes. We also received a grant from Wells Fargo to support the team's infrastructure and to subsidize our riders team membership costs.  Need based race fee scholarships were also made available thanks to the support of our league, NorCal.

  • Before I rode on the team, I used to go home and be stressed out. Now, I am happier and not stressed as much.

Mountain bikiing has encouraged me to try new things. It also has made me more brave.

I get outside more often and I work harder on everything, not just excercising, but homework too.
