Keyboarding is an essential skill that begins early with letter recognition and advancing to keyboard layout, special keys (space, shift, etc.), home row and finger placement, speed and accuracy.
Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade utilize various games to acquaint them with the keyboard layout; grades 2nd through 5th spend at least 10 minutes of each class practicing using individual accounts in TypingWeb, a free online keyboarding program. Although there is in-class practice, students are encouraged to find other times during the week to practice (at home, in classroom, in computer lab). Students should try to practice 10-15 minutes a day, using proper finger placement.
