Oakland Technical High School Theatre Arts Program - under direction of Ena Dallas

The current Theatre Arts Program at Oakland Tech began in 2005, as a district, school, parent and community effort to increase access to the performing arts school wide. Recent auditorium renovation has created a beautiful 900-seat theatre and theatre arts classroom  worthy of the students’ artistic achievements.  Currently there are three sections of Beginning Drama and one section of Advanced Drama, who perform as the student theatre company OakTechRep, producing two full theatrical productions each year and touring several smaller works. Tech Techies, the after school technical theatre program, provides a full scene shop and backstage crew and design opportunities for students. After School Acrobatics offers a physical approach to performance. In 2010 the OakTechRep program won the AHSTF award and travelled to Scotland to perform. Alumni include students studying theatre at NYU’s Tisch School (3 recent grads), Northwestern, Howard U., and the pre-professional Fusion Theatre Company at Laney College.  Current staff include Ena Dallas (Beginning Drama, Acrobatics, OakTechRep Director), and Casey Fern (Technical Director, Tech Techies). Beginning Drama scene study includes physical and vocal technique, playwriting, and work from classic and contemporary texts (Metamorphoses, A Raisin In the Sun). Guest Artist residencies include: CalShakes, Word for Word, Shadowlight Productions, and individual professional actors, directors, playwrights, dramaturgs, and casting directors from the broader Bay Area. Field Trips bi-annually to: American Conservatory Theatre, Berkeley Rep, CalShakes, SF Playhouse.
