OUSD Alternative Education offers many paths to success. Alternative Education offers innovative and engaging educational options for students seeking new ways of learning as an alternative to regular comprehensive middle and high schools. The enrollment process for some Alternative Placements starts at the Student Assignment Center.

Alternative Educaiton Office helps students with the following placements:
- Independent Study: Independent study is a voluntary educational option in which students work independently under the general supervision of a credentialed teacher. While students follow district-adopted curricula and meet district graduation requirements, independent study offers flexibility to meet individual student needs, interests, and learning styles. OUSD has an independent study program at:
- Sojourner Truth Independent Study (Grades K-12)
- Alternative High Schools: Alternative Schools of Choice are voluntary programs that offer unique educational programs to meet students' individual needs. Alternative Schools allow skilled educators and engaged students to explore new methods of teaching and new ways of learning in a changing society. OUSD has an Alternative High School program at:
- Street Academy (Grades 9-12)
- Gateway to College (Grades 10-12)
- Continuation Education: Continuation Education programs are designed to meet the needs of students who are at least seventeen (16) years of age who are at risk of not graduating - those having completed no more than 50 high school credits. Continuation Schools provide an opportunity for students to earn a high school diploma and/or prepare for advancement to community college and career options. OUSD has Continuation Education programs at:
- Dewey High School (Grades 10-12)
- Rudsdale High School (Grades 10-12)
- Rudsdale Newcomer Program (Grades 10-12)
- Ralph J. Bunche Academy (Grades 10-12)
