Hoover Elementary School's approach to English Language Arts includes the Balanced Literacy approach as well as Blended Learning. With Balanced Literacy, teachers use the Lucy Calkins Units of Study for reading and writing, in which a teacher models a skill or strategy for reading or writing, and students have time to independently apply that skill or strategy. Teachers tailor instruction to the needs of individual students through conferences and small group instruction. Hoover also uses the online reading programs (Blended Learning) Lexia, Accelerated Reader 360, and Headsprout, all of which are adaptive to the learning needs of each individual student.
