    2016-2017 School Year!
    Many exciting changes have come to Oakland High this year! Always proud to provide an excellent education to all students in a safe environment, our faculty last year voted to change the Bell Schedule to an "8-Period" day, using an A/B block schedule.  This change allows all students to take 8 classes each school year, as opposed to the the traditional 6 previously offered.  The advantages are tremendous: more opportunity for credit recovery (if needed) or to take more of our exciting elective courses, dual-enrollment courses or be placed in an internship. 
    With these changes, we feel each and every student will receive a solid foundation for not only high academic achievement but for pursuing personal, social and emotional growth.  Our goal is that all our students are prepared to enter the work force fully prepared for life's challenges.  We offer a solid college preparatory program with six career-oriented pathways, and offer nearly a dozen Advanced Placement and Honors offerings allowing our students to be very competitive in the college application process senior year. We routinely send graduates to notable public and private universities.
    This year alone, we will have dozens of Class of 2016 graduates attending classes across the state at California State University campuses at East Bay, Long Beach, Monterey, Northridge, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Sonoma. Nearly four dozen recent graduates will begin college life at University of California campuses, including Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz. A few others are staying local at Holy Names University, Mills, and St. Mary's College, while our most adventurous graduates will venture out of state to make their mark at Spelman College.
    All of our Oakland High students find support through one of our six specialized schools within our school: the Kephera academy (African-American Manhood Development), the Environmental Sciences Academy, the Public Health Academy, Project Lead the Way, Social Justice & Reform (which houses the AVID program) or the Visual Arts & Academics Academy.  Last year, we were able to go "wall to wall" with those 10th graders, meaning we were able to include all 10th grade students in an academy - a very big development! We also have structured 9th grade "families" to give all in-coming freshmen the best possible start to their high school careers. Oakland High is very committed to retaining all of in-coming 9th graders through to graduation!
    Another strength of our school is the student Leadership program and our Athletics program.  A long-standing tradition at Oakland High, the active Delegate Assembly (student government) and Leadership class not only plan student activities, but also regularly contribute to school policy decisions. Wildcats also have the opportunity to express their school spirit by participating in our more than fifty clubs and/or the  twenty-two interscholastic sports offered, including Football, Basketball, Baseball and Softball, as well as Badminton, Bowling, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track, Volleyball, and Wrestling.
