Skyline Boys and Girls Wrestling are wrapping up their 2016-2017 season. This year Skyline saw a first for the Wrestling team - we had our first ever girls team. The girls competed in female only tournaments, as well as some Junior Varsity tournaments for boys and girls. They also wrestled in dual meets across Oakland. Four of the girls competed in the girls tournament. The boys team saw five boys compete in (OAL) finals on February 18 at Skyline. Two of the boys advanced to the State meet which is March 3-4 in Fresno, CA.
This year the team only had one returning wrestler from the 2015-2016 team. Despite our lack of experience, we have a team made up of dedicated and enthusiastic student athletes and coaches, said assistant coach, Cody Strub.
"This team was one of the most dedicated groups I have ever coached," Strub said. "The team was at practice daily and doing what they were asked to do. The group as a whole improved their skills nicely and got in great shape."
"We are looking forward to the State tournament, which will boost our experience, and next year’s team. As coaches we would love more participants … if you think at all about wrestling please reach out to one of the coaches or a current team member," said Strub.
Head coach Dennis Spencer, Skyline teacher, can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org, and assistant coach Strub can be contacted at email@example.com. The wrestling season starts in early November with both the girls and boys practicing daily during the week. We will have OAL Dual Meets on Thursdays and tournaments on Saturdays.
